What to Do If Your Pet Gets Lost

September 1, 2015
Did you know that one in three pets will become lost at some point during their lives? While we truly hope that none of our clients have to experience the sorrow and anxiety of having a beloved pet go missing, we do want to offer some advice, just in case. Below, Westside Animal Hospital, your local Pooler, GA animal clinic, offers tips on what to do if your pet is lost.

Check Your Home

Start by checking your entire home and property. Fluffy may have gotten herself locked in a closet, trunk, or drawer. If Fido dug out of the yard, his escape route may provide clues as to where he went.

Search The Area

Do a thorough search of your neighborhood. Remember to check ditches, alleys, and empty lots. If you are on good terms with your neighbors, let them know that your furry friend is missing and ask them to keep an eye out.

Spread The Word

There are several ways to spread the alert about your missing furbaby. Contact local papers right away to place a lost ad. Make a flyer of your pet, with front and side photos. Include your pet’s description and specific information about when and where they were last seen. We recommend offering a reward, as a monetary incentive can increase your chances of getting a response. Many small businesses keep bulletin boards for customers to share information, so stop by local businesses. Social media can also be very helpful. Upload the flyer, and ask friends and family to share it.

Check Shelters

Check all shelters within an hour’s drive of your house. Some shelters will take your information, and contact you if they get an animal that matches your furry friend’s description. However, this isn’t a universal practice, and it definitely isn’t infallible. We strongly recommend going in person, and making repeated trips.

Verify Your Microchip Records

A microchip can greatly increase the odds of your furbaby coming home. If your pet is chipped, make sure that your records are correct in the microchip manufacturer’s database. Many chip manufacturers offer assistance to people who have lost their pets. Some, for instance, send alerts to concerned local citizens, veterinarians, and animal rescues. Contact the manufacturer and ask about options. Does your pet need a microchip? We are here to help! Contact Westside Animal Hospital,  your Pooler, GA veterinary clinic, any time.
