Common Allergens

Just as with humans, allergic reactions in pets happen when Fido and Fluffy are exposed to something they cannot tolerate. Pets can develop allergies at any age, and to a wide variety of substances. Dust, pollen, and mold are some of the most common allergens. Your furry pal can also be allergic to certain ingredients in their food, or to specific materials, such as rubber or plastic. Some of our four-legged friends react to insect bites, while others may be allergic to airborne fumes or vapors, such as perfume, cigarette smoke, or aerosol.

Symptoms

Itchiness is one of the major symptoms of allergic reactions in pets. Skin problems, such as hot spots and/or red, flaky, or crusty skin; are not uncommon, especially in dogs. Your pet may sneeze, snore, cough, or wheeze. Vomiting and diarrhea can also be indicative of allergies, as can red or runny eyes. We strongly recommend vacuuming and dusting frequently, and changing your air filters regularly. (This will also help with fleas and keep your home fur-free.) If you have a cat, keep Fluffy indoors, especially if she reacts to pollen, leaves, or trees. As for Fido, you may want to get into the habit of wiping his paws and belly down when you bring him in.
