Is Your Cat Happy?

February 15, 2018
As you may have noticed, kitties can be a bit mysterious at times. For instance, Fluffy won’t hesitate to give you a piece of her mind about getting bathed or going for car rides, but can be quite indecisive when it comes to getting petted. How can you tell if your cat is content? In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet offers some suggestions.

Purr

The purr is considered a telltale sign of kitty happiness. In fact, some cats start purring as soon as someone pets them or picks them up! Cats do purr when they are sick or frightened, so purring isn’t always a definitive sign of contentment. That said, if your furry buddy often starts her engine when you pet her or cuddle her, you may very well have a happy feline on your hands.

Affection

If you take good care of Fluffy, she may show her appreciation in some very adorable ways. Your feline pal may flip over, so you can rub her belly, or push her head against your hand so you’ll pet her. She might also follow you around from room to room, rub against your legs, or snuggle up on your lap.

Behavior

Happy kitties are often playful, curious, and a bit mischievous. Friskiness is a good indication that your pet is content. If Fluffy is happy, she may enjoy pouncing on various toys, or perhaps watching birds from her favorite perch. Your furball may also investigate nooks and crannies around the house. She may even try to lend a helping paw with household chores, such as changing sheets.

Appearance

Healthy cats are happy cats! Shiny fur and clear eyes are good indications of your feline buddy’s health. Fluffy should also be at or near her ideal weight. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Posture

You can tell quite a bit about your furball from her body language. Happy cats often hold their tails straight up in the air, for instance, and may sleep in sprawled out positions. Fluffy’s facial expressions are also a good indication of her state of mind.

Vocalizations

Does your feline friend respond or react positively when you speak to her? If so, your cat may be quite content with her life. Please contact us, your Savannah, GA pet hospital, for all your kitty’s veterinary care needs. We are here to help!
