Keeping Your Cat Indoors

March 15, 2018
Do you let your kitty roam outside? If so, you may want to curb your pet’s privileges a bit. While Fluffy may love getting some fresh air and sunshine, she’ll be much safer living indoors. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a local Savannah, GA vet discusses keeping your cat inside.

The Dangers of Going Outdoors

Although your furball may think of herself as a ferocious little predator, she is very small and could easily get hurt. Some of the dangers cats face outside include weather, wild animals, cars, and chemicals. Kitties that are allowed to wander are at much higher risk of being lost, hurt, or even killed. They’re also more likely to pick up dangerous parasites. Keeping your cat in is even better for birds and other local wildlife. Our cute feline friends kill a whopping 20.7 billion mammals and almost 4 billion birds every year!

Grounding Fluffy

If you tell your kitty that she’s grounded, she’ll probably just blink at you and demand to be let out right meow. What you’ll need to do is change her mind about the benefits of going outdoors. One way to do this is to make the areas around doors less appealing. When Fluffy scratches at the front door, squirt her with water or make a loud noise. These things won’t hurt your pet, but they will definitely annoy her.

Purr Activation

To keep your cat happy and entertained indoors, you’ll need to offer her a few kitty comforts. First, make sure that Fluffy has plenty of safe, suitable toys, and take time to play with her every day. Your feline pal will also appreciate some cat furniture. Choose pieces that encourage healthy activities, such as jumping and climbing. Stimulation is also important. Birdwatching is one of Fluffy’s favorite pastimes. Offer your furry buddy a window seat with a good view, so she can sit and watch local wildlife. To give your cat a taste of nature, set out some pet-safe plants for her to nibble on and hide behind. You’ll find a full list at the ASPCA website. Last but not least, keep your kitty’s little motor going by paying lots of attention to her, and making her feel loved, safe, and pampered.
