6 Ways To Prevent Kitty Obesity

June 1, 2019
Did you know that obesity is one of the most common health issues we see in our feline patients? Fluffy may be cute if she’s a bit chubby, but she’ll be much healthier if she’s at or near her ideal weight. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA veterinarian offers tips on keeping your furball from turning into a butterball.

Playtime

Take time to play with your feline buddy every day. Even a few minutes of chasing after that little red dot or batting at a wand toy can help keep your kitty in shape. Plus, this is a great way to bond with your cat, and spend some quality time with her.

Kitty Furniture

Cat furniture can also be helpful in keeping Fluffy fit and healthy. Choose pieces that encourage your furry friend to run and jump. Cat towers are great for this!

Portion Control

It’s very easy to accidentally overfeed a cat, especially when said cat is begging for you to fill her bowl again. Pay close attention to Fluffy’s portions. Even giving your furball ten extra calories a day can cause her to gain a pound a year. That’s a lot for a kitty! Ask your vet for specific advice on serving sizes.

Resist The Meow

Cats are adorable, and it’s probably safe to say they know it. Many of our feline friends have their owners trained to feed them on demand. We know, it’s hard to resist that furry face. However, if Fluffy has already eaten exactly what she should have eaten, don’t let her manipulate you into overfeeding her. That cute meow could be a lie!

Weigh Fluffy

You may not immediately notice your cat putting on extra pounds, especially if she’s got long hair. One thing you can do is weigh your kitty regularly. Needless to say, you may not have much luck getting Fluffy to step onto the scale. Weigh yourself first, then pick up your furry pal and weigh yourself again.

Limit Treats

Treats are a great way to get Fluffy’s little motor going. However, you aren’t doing your cute pet any favors by overfeeding her. Choose healthy snacks, and be careful not to go overboard. Please reach out to us here at Westside Animal Hospital, your Savannah, GA vet clinic, if ever we can be of assistance. We’re always happy to help!
