Summer Care For Cats

July 1, 2019
As you may have noticed, many cats love sunbathing. Fluffy spends quite a bit of time soaking up the sun! However, summer’s hot weather can be dangerous for kitties. Therefore, you’ll want to take some precautions to keep your pet safe from the heat. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet offers advice on keeping your furball cool and comfy this summer.

Hydration

Making sure your cat always has fresh water is always important, but it’s absolutely crucial in summer. If Fluffy likes drinking from the faucet, she may enjoy a pet fountain or an automated waterer. You can also drop a few ice cubes into her bowl on hot days.

Cool Bed

Cats are experts at getting comfortable. However, if you want to score some extra purrs, make your feline pal a little hammock bed. All you need is a table with four legs and a sturdy piece of fabric. Cut the fabric so that it’s a bit smaller than the tabletop, and attach the corners to the table legs. Done! Fluffy may also appreciate having a bed near a fan or air conditioning vent.

Keeping Kitty In

Your adventurous little furball may enjoy sniffing flowers, chasing butterflies, and leaving pawprints on your windshield, but she’s much safer indoors. Cars, predators, and even other cats all pose a danger to Fluffy. Heat is another concern, especially at this time of year. Keep your pet safe and sound indoors!

Brushing

Dead fur and dander can make your cat’s pretty coat hot and itchy. Brushing your kitty regularly will help her stay cooler. This is also a good way to make your furry little diva feel loved and pampered!

Let Your Pet Roam

If you let Fluffy roam freely throughout the house, she’ll naturally seek out cool spots. You may find your feline buddy sprawled out on the bathroom or kitchen tile, as tiles tend to stay cool. Just keep an eye on your pet if she follows you around. You don’t want to accidentally lock her in a shed or attic!

Preventative Care

Fleas, ticks, and other parasites come out in droves at this time of year. Keep Fluffy protected from dangerous diseases and parasites by keeping up with her vaccinations and parasite control.
