Leaving Your Cat Home Alone

November 1, 2019
Kitties are very independent, which is one reason they are such popular pets. Fluffy keeps herself clean, spends the vast majority of her time sleeping, and discretely uses her litterbox to relieve herself. Generally, our feline pals do just fine if left home by themselves for short periods of time. However, there are ways to make your pet’s alone time more safe, fun, and comfortable for her. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a local Savannah, GA vet lists some key ones.

Toys

Offer Fluffy lots of fun toys to pounce on and bat under the couch. Kitties all have their own unique tastes, so offer your furball a variety, and see what she likes best.

Comfy Beds

Speaking of beds, your cat will probably sleep quite a bit while you’re out. Make sure she has lots of comfy napping spots to choose from.

Window Seats

Our feline buddies can spend hours looking out windows and daydreaming about catching birds and mice. Make sure Fluffy has a comfy bed with a good view.

Background Noise

Before you leave, turn a radio or TV on for your furry buddy. The sound of music and voices will provide mental stimulation and help keep her from feeling bored or lonely.

Kittyproofing

Our frisky feline friends have a bit of a reputation for getting into trouble. Make sure your home is safe for Fluffy by removing or securing potential dangers. This list includes toxic plants, wires and cords, plastic bags and ties, chemicals, medication, and any small or sharp objects. Also, make sure your doors and windows close securely.

Climate

Fluffy has a fur coat on, and she can quickly overheat in Georgia’s hot weather. Leave a fan and/or AC on for your pet in summer. If you’ll be gone after dark, turn a light on for your kitty.

Buddies

Although cats can be left alone, that doesn’t mean they don’t get lonely. If Fluffy is an only pet, and is spending a good chunk of her time by herself, you may want to consider getting her a buddy. Of course, this isn’t an across-the-board recommendation. You’ll have to consider your household and budget, as well as the age, history, and purrsonality of both kitties.
