Caring for a Dog With Allergies

March 15, 2020

Does your dog have allergies? Just like people, pups can be allergic to things like grass, mold, dust, and pollen. Allergies cannot be cured, but there are some ways to manage them. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a local Savannah, GA vet discusses caring for a dog with allergies.

Veterinary Care

First and foremost, if you know or suspect that Fido has allergies, take him to the vet for some tests. Once you know exactly what your pooch is reacting to, you and your vet can discuss treatment options, such as medication.

Vacuum

Vacuuming will remove dust, dirt, and dander from your home. It will also help with odors! We recommend doing high-traffic areas and your furry friend’s favorite spots daily, and more thorough cleanings weekly.

Pollen

Fido can pick up quite a bit of dust and pollen outdoors. Get into the habit of wiping his paws and belly down with a damp cloth before bringing him inside. It’s also a good idea to monitor pollen levels. Limit your canine pal’s outdoor time when levels are high.

Air Filter

A good air purifier is definitely a great investment, even if Fido doesn’t have allergies. Remember to change the filter regularly.

Bedding

Wash Fido’s bedding regularly, using unscented detergent and the hot cycles on your washer and dryer. If your furry pal’s bed is too big to go in the wash, vacuum it.

Parasite Control

Some dogs are allergic to flea bites, which are uncomfortable enough as it is. Keep up with your four-legged friend’s parasite control products!

Grooming

If your dog has allergies, he may not do well with heavily scented shampoos. Use hypoallergenic, unscented shampoos on your furry buddy.

Food

If your canine companion has food allergies, it may take some time to sort out exactly what isn’t agreeing with him. You may need to put your pooch on a very bland diet for a while, until his symptoms subside. Then, you can start introducing things one at a time, to see what makes him react. (Note: the hardest part of this process may be resisting those puppy dog eyes. If Fido is bored with his food, he may act extra theatrical to try and get you to share yours.)
