Signs of Illness in Dogs

April 15, 2020

Dogs are very communicative. Fido doesn’t have much of a problem letting you know when he needs a walk, or would like to politely request some bacon. However, our canine pals aren’t quite as clear when they don’t feel well. Therefore, it’s important for you to watch for warning signs. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet lists some signs that your dog needs veterinary care.

Reduced Appetite

Man’s Best Friend loves food, and will eat just about anything within reach. Therefore, it’s always a red flag when a dog loses interest in dinner.

Vomiting/Diarrhea

Just like people, dogs occasionally get upset stomachs. However, it’s best to play it safe, and contact your vet after these incidents. Vomiting and diarrhea can both be a sign of something serious.

Strange Postures/Positions

We know, dogs sleeps in silly positions sometimes. However, if your canine buddy is in a position that seems stiff or unnatural, contact your vet right away. Trembling is also a cause for concern.

Difficulty Urinating

Pay attention to what happens when you are walking Fido. If he seems like he is straining to go, or if his urine is dark or bloody, take him to the vet immediately.

Changes In Water Intake

It’s normal for dogs to drink more water when it’s hot, or after vigorous activity. However, if your four-legged buddy suddenly starts drinking a lot more or less than seems normal, there may be something going on with him.

Distended/Hard Tummy

Another thing to watch for is bloating and hardness of the abdomen. If your pup’s furry belly seems hard or swollen, call your vet immediately.

Unusual Behavior

Any uncharacteristic behavior, such as whimpering, withdrawal, or sudden aggression, is a warning sign. Dogs in pain sometimes yelp or flinch when you touch the sore spot.

Restlessness

Does Fido keep getting up and down, as though he just can’t get comfortable? Your furry friend could be reacting to pain or discomfort.

Lethargy

There certainly are some furry couch potatoes out there. That said, if Fido is uncharacteristically lazy, he may be sick.

Respiratory Issues

Coughing, wheezing, sneezing, gasping, and excessive panting are all red flags. These can be indicative of some very serious issues!
