Keeping Fido Cool

June 15, 2020

Summer is just around the corner. Hot weather can be tough on dogs. Fido is already wearing a fur coat. He also can’t cool off by sweating, the way we can. Keeping your pet cool is very important! In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet offers some ‘pawesome’ tips on keeping your furry bff comfortable in the heat.

Water

First and foremost, make sure that your pooch always has plenty of fresh water. If you have a large house and/or more than one pup, set out a few different water stations. If you have a yard for Fido to run and play in, keep water bowls outside as well. Your canine pal may also appreciate having a kiddie pool to splash around in. Watching your furry best friend hard at play is great stress relief!

Cold Snacks

Cold treats are a great way to cool down. Fido also loves them! If you can’t find doggy ice cream in local supermarkets or groceries, make your own. For a base, you can use natural peanut butter, sodium-free broth, plain yogurt, organic baby food (with no onions or garlic), ripe bananas, or pureed pumpkin. You can also offer your furry buddy a bowl of chilled sodium-free broth, or just drop a few ice cubes into his bowl.

Grooming

Dead hair and dander can make dogs quite hot and itchy. Brushing him regularly will remove these things from his coat, and help him stay cooler. Some pups will also be more comfortable with a cute summer ‘do. Ask your vet if Fido would benefit from having a good haircut. You can also get your canine companion a cooling vest.

Schedule

When it starts getting warmer, adjust your dog’s schedule so that he stays indoors during the hottest parts of the day. Walk and play with Fido in the mornings and evenings, when it’s cooler out. If you have a yard for your pooch to play in, make sure that he always has shade outdoors.

Cool Bed

Make sure your dog has a cool bed to relax in. You can put a towel into the freezer, and then put it on his bed. Or, point a fan at or over it. Just make sure Fido can’t knock the fan down.
