Cattitude

October 15, 2020
Does your kitty seem to switch between cuddly and cranky at the blink of an eye? Do you have a furry little curmudgeon on your hands? Our feline friends are small, but they do have big personalities. Some are very sweet, and others, well, not so much. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet discusses caring for a cranky cat.

Medical Issues

Sometimes kitties get grouchy because they are sick or hurt. If your pet has only recently started acting grouchy, there could be something going on with her. Have your vet check her out. If your furball gets the all-clear, then you know you have a cranky cat, instead of a sick one.

Playtime

Speaking of playtime, this can be a great way for your cat to burn off her extra energy. Jumping and pouncing allows your pet a healthy way to work off any kitty angst or rage she feels. Try to play with Fluffy every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes.

Violence or Play

Sometimes it’s difficult to sort out whether Fluffy is being angry or playful, or whether she’s just irritated because you’re late with her breakfast or didn’t pet her long enough. If your kitty is truly angry, she’ll likely flatten her ears and lash her tail. She may also hiss or growl. If you see these signs, just walk away and leave your furball alone until she cools down.

Play Etiquette

Fluffy is a predator by nature, so she can’t resist pouncing and biting. However, you want to make sure your furry pal understands that you are not a toy. If your kitty bites or scratches you, tell her ‘No’ in a Disapproving manner. You can also say something like ‘Bad Kitty’ or ‘Don’t bite’ or ‘Play nice.’ Then, ignore your feisty feline for a while. Your pet will get the hint sooner or later!

Purrsonality

Keep in mind that some kitties just don’t like to be held or cuddled. Others are easily frightened, which may make them act defensively. Let your feline buddy be herself. If Fluffy doesn’t like being touched, just talk to her and offer toys and treats. One of the best things about cats is how unique they all are!
