Tips for Making Dog Biscuits

February 15, 2021
February 23rd is National Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day! While it’s safe to say that our canine buddies appreciate biscuits every day, it is good to shine the spotlight on Fido’s favorite treat. Over the past year, many people have taken up cooking. Why not try your hand at making your pet’s snacks? In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet discusses making your dog biscuits.

Benefits

There are some good reasons to make your dog’s snacks, aside from just scoring some extra tail wags and happy dances. You’ll be able to choose exactly what your furry bff is eating, and ensure that the ingredients in his food are all high-quality. This is particularly beneficial for those whose pups have health issues and/or require special diets.

Recipes

You’ll find many different recipes online. You can also mix and match, or even try your own. Generally, you’ll want to start with some sort of base. Some of the things you can use for this are pureed pumpkin, sodium-free broth, plain yogurt, ripe bananas, organic baby food, and minced or shredded meat. You can also add things like whole wheat flour, egg, olive or wheat germ oil, or water to thicken or thin the mix as needed. To customize Fido’s snacks, add things like cheese, bacon bits, pieces of treats or kibble, or safe fruits or veggies.

Unsafe Foods

Keep in mind that not everything we eat is safe for Fido. Some unsafe foods include grapes, currants, and raisins; garlic, onions, and scallions; chocolate; alcohol; raw meat, dough, or yeast; meat on the bone; nuts; mushrooms; avocados; anything with seeds or pips; and anything that contains xylitol. Ask your vet for more information on safe and unsafe foods.

Presentation

Fido may be a foodie, but he’s not particularly interested in how his food is plated. Actually, he really doesn’t care what it looks like. However, it may still be worth your while to use a cute cutter, perhaps one that’s shaped like a bone. For one thing, this will make it easy to tell your pup’s treats from those made for people. These also make cute gifts for Fido’s four-legged pals. Put some in a mason jar, and tie a pretty ribbon around it. Voila!
