7 Great Reasons To Adopt A Rescued Guinea Pig

March 1, 2021
March is Adopt A Rescued Guinea Pig Month! If you’re considering bringing a new pet into your home, you may want to consider adopting one of these little furballs. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a local Savannah, GA vet lists some reasons Guinea pigs make great pets.

They’re Quiet

We love our canine and feline pals, but they can be a bit loud. With a Guinea pig, you won’t need to worry about fielding complaints from angry neighbors. These guys are normally pretty quiet. When they do speak up, it’s usually a pretty adorable noise called a wheek.

They’re Affectionate

Many pocket pets are quite timid. (This makes sense, given that they are usually prey animals in the wild.) Guinea pigs, however, tend to be a bit more charismatic than many of their pint-sized pals. Some even like to cuddle with their humans, or sleep in their laps!

They’re Gentle

Guinea pigs are quite popular as children’s pets, in part because they tend to be quite docile, and rarely bite. That said, we don’t recommend them for children that are below the age of five or so, just because they are so fragile.

They’re Adorable

Another reason to get a Guinea pig? They really are super cute! You can also get cavies in a variety of colors. Plus, they have a few different hairstyles. Some have short hair, some are quite fluffy, and some even have curls.

Tricks

Did you know that Guinea pigs can perform some simple tricks? You may be able to teach your little buddy to turn in a circle, come when called, or jump through a hoop.

Popcorns

Guinea pigs actually have their own breakdancing move: the popcorn. When a cavy popcorns, they typically jump straight up. As one might expect, this often looks like a kernel of corn popping. (And yes, it’s as cute as it sounds.)

Small Pets Need Love Too

If you’re reading this, it’s probably safe to say that you’re an animal lover, and hate to see pets in shelters. If it’s not feasible for you to get a dog or cat right now, consider adopting a little furball. We believe that all animals, no matter how big they are, deserve loving homes.
