6 Reasons To Be Thankful For Older Dogs

November 15, 2021
November is Senior Pet Month! We love all of our canine patients, but we do have a special soft spot for the ones that are in their golden years. Older dogs have some wonderful qualities! In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet lists some key ones.

Calm, Lovable Pets

One of the best things about older dogs is their demeanor. Fido can melt hearts at any age, but he’s really extra charming as he ages. Pets in their senior years tend to be very sweet and affectionate. You can see that when you look into the eyes of an older pooch, and just see this sweet, innocent soul looking back at you.

Lower Activity Needs

Many puppies will be spending Thanksgiving running around, getting underfoot, and investigating, well, everything. They’ll also need lots of walks and playtime to help them burn off all that energy. Senior dogs, on the other hand, will probably be more interested in napping, collecting ear scritches, and angling for treats.

Prior Training

Younger dogs need quite a bit of petucation to learn how to be good boys. By the time Fido reaches his doggy retirement age, he’ll already know the ins and outs of being a dog. This is one reason people are often delighted with the senior dogs they’ve adopted.

Less Destruction

There will be plenty of pups out there getting into shenanigans on Thanksgiving, whether by getting into the trash, chewing guests’ shoes, or just being playful and active. Older pooches, however, are content just snoozing in the same room as their humans. There’s a lot to be said for having a pet that is more interested in naps than mischief!

Peaceful Walks

Walking a younger dog can be a bit challenging at times. You may find yourself steering Fido away from squirrels. Older dogs aren’t as interested in chasing the neighbor’s cat, and are often perfectly happy just quietly trudging along beside their humans.

Tail Wags

Our canine pals really just want someone to love them, pet them, and make them feel safe. That’s a pretty small price to pay for Fido’s ongoing love and loyalty. You may find that tail wags from older dogs really melt your heart! As your Savannah, GA animal clinic, we’re here to help. Please contact us for all your furry freind’s veterinary care needs!
