February is National Cat Health Month. Kitties aren’t hard to care for. However, they are quite small and vulnerable, and are at risk of illness, injury, and disease. They also have quite a knack for getting into mischief! In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet lists some ways to keep Fluffy happy and healthy.
Good Food
Proper nutrition is a cornerstone of any good pet care regimen. Ask your vet for specific advice, including brands, portion sizes, and feeding practices.
Ground The Furball
One of the best things you can do for your feline buddy is keep her indoors. The Great Outdoors just poses too many dangers for a curious little furball! Cars, weather, chemicals, parasites, wild animals, and even other kitties all threaten Fluffy outside.
Clean Litterbox
This one isn’t exactly rocket science. Dirty litterboxes can gather all sorts of germs! Fluffy’s powder room should also be in a place that isn’t hard to reach, or too hot or cold.
Regular Veterinary Care
Your furball needs proper veterinary care to thrive. Many cats don’t see us as often as they should! We recommend that kitties be examined at least once a year. Parasite control and vaccinations are also important.
Spay/Neuter
Spaying and neutering is often recommended primarily to prevent unwanted litters. However, it’s also beneficial to Fluffy’s health. Not only are fixed kitties less likely to wander off in search of love, (which can be dangerous), they also have reduced or even eliminated risks of developing several health problems, such as uterine cancer.
Kitty Comforts
Little luxuries can have a big impact on your cat’s health and well-being. Give your furry buddy lots of comfy napping spots! Your kitty should also always have access to rooms that are heated or cooled, depending on the season.
Stimulation/Enrichment
Fluffy will get stressed and unhappy with nothing to do aside from stare at the walls. Toys are of course the biggest source of entertainment for our feline friends. There are also things you can do to make your home kitty-friendly. Get your cute pet some pet furniture, and offer her things to explore. Playtime is also a must. Finally, just pay lots of attention to your furball, and keep that motor going.
