Love Your Pet Day is February 20th! Pets are wonderful for children. They make great cuddle buddies and playmates, and offer friendship, companionship, and love. They also help teach children about empathy. If you have children, this is a great time to help them connect with and care for the family pets. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet lists some great kids’ projects.
Box Castle
This is a great one for cats and bunnies. It’s also a pretty easy project for kids to complete. You can make a simple version by just connecting a few boxes and cutting out some doors and windows. Or, go all-out and build your furry friend a palace, complete with towers and multiple levels. (Fluffy would probably also appreciate a stocked moat, but that’s probably a bit much.)
Homemade Treats
One thing all of our furry friends have in common? A love of snacks! Fido and Fluffy can enjoy some plain, cooked meat, fish, or poultry, without the skin, bones or fat. For smaller pets, such as Guinea pigs, you’ll want to consult your vet.
Playtime
There are few things cuter than kids and pets having fun together. Playing is both fun and beneficial for pets. It’s actually their main form of both entertainment and exercise! If your little ones are still quite young, you will need to supervise playtime carefully.
DIY Toys
Making toys can be a fun project for little ones. You’ll find lots of options online! This is particularly great for pets with open-rooted teeth, such as bunnies and Guinea pigs. Here’s one option: just crumple up some paper into balls and put them into a shoebox with some yummy treats. Just stick with things you know are safe.
Photo Session
You can never have too many pictures of your kids with their pets! Take time to get some really good photos. One thing that can make a big difference is contrast. Pick an area that contrasts with your pet’s fur, and have the kids change into something that will stand out against both.
Art
Art is a wonderful way for kids to learn to express themselves. Have your kids do something creative for or about their furry pal. This can be drawing, writing, dance, or anything else.
