Ways To Celebrate Remember Me Thursday

September 16, 2022
Did you know that over half of American households have pets? That’s definitely a good thing, but there are still many pets in need of homes. More than 6 million pets enter American shelters every year. Sadly, about 900,000 of them never leave. These heartbreaking facts are at the heart of Remember Me Thursday, which is coming up on the 22nd. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet lists some ways to recognize and honor this occasion.

History

Remember Me Thursday was started by Mike Arms, president and CEO of the Helen Woodward Center, in 2013. Arms wanted to bring together the voices of animal lovers for a great cause: to help increase pet adoptions and reduce euthanasia. The movement is definitely growing: it’s now supported in over 190 countries! Many celebrities are also helping spread the word. You can read more about Remember Me Thursday on the official website here.

Adopt, Don’t Shop

If you’re an animal lover, you are likely also saddened by the thoughts of all of those homeless pets. While no one can help all of them, the things you do can make a difference. When you are ready for a new furry friend, head to a shelter, and give one of these sweet pets a second chance.

Contest

Adopting isn’t the only way you can raise awareness about this issue. If you work in Stem, you can compete in the Stem To The Rescue contest. Just create a presentation about Remember Me Thursday. Winners receive prize money and opportunities.

Candle Lighting

A big part of the Remember Me Celebration is candle lighting. While many participating rescues are doing live versions, you can also do a virtual candle lighting. Sign up at the website here.

Social Media Blitz

Given that raising awareness is a big part of Remember Me Thursday, it only stands to reason that the internet would play a big role. To take part, share your rescued pet’s photo on social media. Use the hashtags #remembermeThursday and #Seethelight.

Spay/Neuter

It’s also very important to make sure that your beloved pet doesn’t contribute to the numbers of pets in shelters. If your furry bff hasn’t been fixed yet, make that appointment right away! Please reach out to us here at Westside Animal Hospital, your Savannah, GA animal clinic, anytime. We’re here for you!
