Spring is here! For people with allergies, this can be a pretty miserable time of year. Our furry friends are also prone to getting allergies. Of course, Fido can’t let you know if he’s feeling stuffy, and he can’t make himself an appointment. It’s important to keep an eye out for warning signs. A local vet lists some things to watch for in this article from Westside Animal Hospital, your Savannah, GA animal clinic.
Red, watery eyes are a pretty common allergic reaction in people. This also happens with dogs!
Allergies can make your furry best bud miserably itchy. Fido may lick or chew himself obsessively, which can lead to sores. He may also rub himself up against furniture, carpets, and/or people to try and get those stubborn itchy spots.
You may also notice skin irritation, such as redness, scaliness, flaking, and/or hair loss. If Fido’s feet itch, you may also see discoloration there.
Sneezing is another red flag to watch for. Your canine companion may also snore, burp, or wheeze.
Some pups develop food allergies. These can manifest in a few different ways. For instance, Fido may get a bit gassy. Vomiting and diarrhea can also be signs of allergies. However, these things can also be signs of many other medical conditions, which can range from mild indigestion to life-threatening issues. Contact your vet immediately if your pooch is having digestive troubles.
Have you noticed your canine pal pawing at his ears? Do Fido’s ears look red or inflamed? Allergies could be the culprit. Bad smells and waxy discharge are also warning signs.
Swelling, particularly around the face and mouth, can also be an indication of allergies. This is often—though not always—a reaction to a run-in with an insect.
Sometimes allergies cause more serious reactions. These can range from seizures to difficulty breathing. Some reactions are so severe they prove deadly, though fortunately this is rare.
If you know or suspect that your canine buddy has allergies, take him to the vet ASAP. Allergies can be managed, but you’ll need to find out exactly what Fido is reacting to before you can look at specific treatment options.
