DIY Bunny Toys

September 15, 2023

Rabbits are undoubtedly among the most adorable of our animal companions. Floppy is a really cute and fun little pet! One of the most important things you can do for your furry little buddy is to make sure that she always has lots of toys. That isn’t just for entertainment purposes: it’s also crucial for her dental care. Fortunately, there are lots of simple things you can make your pet out of everyday household items. A veterinarian discusses bunny toys in this article from Westside Animal Hospital, your Savannah, GA veterinarians.

What Homemade Toys Can I Give My Rabbit?

There’s almost no end to the types of homemade playthings you can offer your furball. Plain paper is a very versatile option. You can crumple it into balls, shred it, fold it into little shapes, or wrap it around yummy treats. You can also stuff the crumpled or shredded paper into a cardboard box or paper grocery bag. Bunnies also love to nibble on cardboard and many wood or wicker objects.

What Are Unsafe Toys And Materials For Bunnies?

You should never give Floppy anything that has been covered in varnish, stain, paint, dye, glitter, or other decorative items or coatings. You should also avoid pine or cedar items, as the oils are toxic to rabbits. Anything with small parts, ropes or strings, or sharp edges is also unsafe. If you’re giving your cute pet cardboard, remove any staples, labels, or tape. Ask your vet for more information.

How Do Rabbits Play?

Floppy is curious, active, and sometimes a bit bossy. You may notice that your pet likes to throw things around, rearrange things, chew on things, and/or just investigate things. Of course, each rabbit is different. One may like a wicker ball, while another may prefer digging through a cardboard box or a storage tote filled with hay, herbs, paper, or other goodies. Pay attention to your furry friend, and see what she likes best.

What Are Some Easy DIY Bunny Toys?

You can stuff small treats into an egg carton, or make tunnels out of boxes. Paper mache tunnels can be fun, too. (Note: use flour-and-water glue and paper that was printed with non-toxic ink.) Another option is to put some safe greens on a piece of twine with clothespins, and string it between two chairs. Box castles can also be a hit!
