Signs That Your Dog May Have Allergies

June 1, 2017
Did you know that dogs can have allergies, just like people can? Fido can’t exactly go get himself some allergy meds, so it’s up to you to watch for signs that your canine pal is reacting to something. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet lists some common symptoms of allergies in dogs.

Skin Troubles

Allergies can be the culprit behind many different types of skin trouble in our furry friends, including itchiness, flaking, red spots, rashes, hair loss, and discoloration. Just like people, dogs do sometimes get the occasional itch, but if Fido is constantly scratching, allergies could be to blame. (Note: fleas and ticks can also make pups Fido itchy, so be sure to keep up with your pet’s parasite control regimen.)

Ear Infections

Ear infections can be quite painful for Man’s Best Friend. If your pooch has recurring ear troubles that go away during treatment, only to shortly reappear, your four-legged buddy could have allergies. This is particularly common in dogs with those adorable floppy ears. This is because the environment these ear shapes create—warm, moist, with little airflow—is a haven for bacteria.

Sniffles/Sneezes

Some signs of allergies in dogs are very similar to those in people. Allergies can make Fido’s eyes red and runny, and can cause coughing, sneezing, or wheezing. Snoring and flatulence can also be indicative of doggy allergies.

Tummy Troubles

Allergies can also cause Fido to vomit or get diarrhea. It’s worth noting that these things can be symptomatic of many different illnesses, so if your furry buddy is throwing up or has diarrhea, contact your vet.

Other Symptoms

While severe allergic reactions are fortunately quite rare, when they do occur, they can be very dangerous. If Fido has a really bad reaction, he could faint, have a seizure, become lethargic, stumble, or fall into a coma. In very rare cases, allergic reactions can even be fatal.

Treating Allergies

If you know or suspect that your pooch has allergies, make an appointment for Fido right away. Your vet will be able to offer treatment options and home care tips, but first he or she will need to run some tests to determine exactly what isn’t getting along with your furry pal.
