Barbeque Safety for Dogs

July 1, 2017
Do you enjoy grilling out? Fido certainly does! If you are having a barbeque, there’s a good chance that your furry pal will be paying very close attention when the food is coming off the grill. Barbeques can be dangerous for Man’s Best Friend, however, so you’ll want to take steps to keep your pet safe. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet discusses grilling out with Fido.

Food

Dogs are absolute experts at getting people to slip them yummy treats. Be very careful with what you give your pup: many popular foods are toxic to our canine friends. Some unsafe foods are garlic, onions, and chives; meat on the bone; avocados; pitted fruits; grapes, currants, and raisins; chocolate; nuts; and anything containing xylitol. Ask your vet for more information.

Chemicals

Many things you may find at a barbeque are toxic to dogs. Lighter fluid, gasoline, torch oil, citronella candles, and sunscreen are a few examples. Keep these items out of paws’ reach!

Trash

As we all know, Fido sometimes gets into the trash. This is a very dangerous habit, as the garbage could contain things like can lids, bones, plastic wrappers, skewers, tin foil, fruit pits, and other hazards. We recommend picking up as soon as everyone has finished eating. Use a trashcan with a secure lid.

Parasites

Keep Fido up to date on his parasite control products. Fleas and ticks come out in droves in summertime! Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Heat

Make sure your pooch always has shade, shelter, and fresh water. Also, watch for signs of overheating, which is very dangerous for our canine buddies. If you notice Fido panting heavily, immediately give him some water and get him to a cooler area. If symptoms persist, contact your vet.

Safety

Keep a close eye on your furry pal. It’s very easy for a dog to slip out through an open door or gate, especially as people are coming or going. Paw and tail injuries are also not uncommon in busy situations. The grill itself is another hazard. Don’t let Fido get too close to the fire! You don’t want him getting singed, or snapping up a sizzling hot sausage that falls to the ground. Is your pet due for veterinary care?
