Shedding Season Survival Tips

April 15, 2018
Spring is on the way! As you pull out your summer clothes out of storage, your furry friend will also be changing into a lighter wardrobe. We all know what that means: pet fur everywhere! In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a local Savannah, GA vet offers some helpful tips on getting through shedding season.

Brushing

Brushing your four-legged pal regularly will really help cut down on the amount of fur you find stuck to your clothes and furniture. You’ll be trapping that dead fur in a brush before it gets all over everything. If you have a dog, take Fido outdoors for his beauty sessions. That way, the extra fur will just blow away, instead of getting stuck to everything. (Note: you may want to wear an apron when brushing your furry buddy, so you don’t end up covered in hair.)

Vacuum

Vacuuming regularly is one of the best things you can do to keep your home fur-free. Do high-traffic areas and your pet’s favorite hangouts daily, and follow up with more thorough cleanings every week. You may have seen vacuum attachments that you can actually use on pets. Whether or not you should use these depends on your pet. Some dogs and cats don’t mind being groomed. There definitely are some furry little divas out there! However, many pets are frightened by the sound or feeling of being vacuumed. Never subject your animal companion to being vacuumed against their wishes. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Fur Busting

Did you know that a squeegee works great at removing pet fur from carpets and upholstery? You can also use a damp sponge or rubber dish glove. A janitor’s broom also works very well on carpet.

Clothing

Keep a few lint rollers on hand. You may also want to keep spares in your car and at work. Heavy tape, such as duct tape, will also work. If you want to quickly remove pet fur from a single piece of clothing, toss it into the dryer with a damp washcloth.

Slipcovers

Even if you don’t use slipcovers all year long, you may want to use them during peak shedding times. Look for machine-washable ones that are easy to put on or take off.
