Signs That Your Cat Needs More Attention

October 15, 2018
While Fluffy may try to make us think that she’s independent and carefree, the truth is that cats are actually very emotional. Our feline buddies can get extremely attached to their humans. They also often feel sad, lonely, or anxious if they don’t get enough attention. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet lists some signs that Fluffy may need more attention.

Meowing

While some cats are more talkative than others are, most will speak up when they want something. If your furball is constantly meowing, and immediately starts purring when you pick her up or pet her, she may be trying to tell you she wants more attention.

Pawing

Does your kitty sometimes paw at your arm or leg? This adorable request for snuggles can be pretty hard to refuse!

Inappropriate Soiling

Kitties do sometimes make a point by soiling inappropriately. Of course, a lack of attention isn’t the only possible cause here. Litterboxes mishaps can be indicative of some pretty serious health issues. Err on the side of caution, and schedule a full exam for your furball.

Smacking Stuff Over

The jury is still out on this one: cats seem to like knocking things over for a variety of reasons. We can’t entirely rule out the fact that Fluffy is just being playful, and/or indulging her natural predatory instincts. That said, it’s entirely possible that our feline companions just do this for attention.

Following You Around

Does your kitty trail after you like a furry, four-legged shadow? Does Fluffy try her best not to let you out of her sight? This is another sign that your pet wants to spend more time with you.

Cuddles

Many of our feline friends are quite the little cuddlers. If Fluffy lands on your lap the moment you sit down, and immediately starts purring, she may not be getting as much attention as she wants.

Overgrooming

If your furball is feeling sad or lonely, she may react by overgrooming herself. That said, this can also be caused by medical issues. If you notice any changes in your cat’s fur, such as bald spots, consult your vet. Is your feline pal due for an exam, vaccinations, or parasite control? Do you have questions about cat care?
