Did you know that bunnies groom each other as a form of social interaction? This is super cute to watch! However, if you only have one furball, you’ll need to care for her yourself. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet discusses Floppy’s beauty care needs.

Brushing

Different types of rabbits have different grooming needs. Some, like Angoras, should be brushed daily. Others only need to be brushed once a week. Do some research, and check with your vet. When you want to brush Floppy, pick a time when she is feeling relaxed and cuddly. Settle in with her on your lap, and start gently brushing her. Be careful not to jerk at tangles: rabbit skin is very delicate and rips easily. Incorporate lots of cuddles and praise.

Molting

Bunnies don’t shed continuously: they lose all of their old fur and grow a new coat at the same time. Or, to put it another way, a few times a year, your rabbit will basically explode. This is called molting. When Floppy is molting, you’ll need to brush her every day. Your vet may also recommend giving her supplements to prevent hairballs.

Bathing

If you’ve never had a rabbit before, it may surprise you to learn that baths are actually very dangerous for bunnies. Floppy can be so scared and traumatized by being submerged in water that she may go into shock, which can be fatal. If your cute pet gets something spilled on her fur, fill a rubber tote with lukewarm water, and gently lower that part of her body into it. Swish water around to clean her. If she gets something on her face, use a damp cloth to clean her off.

Claws

If Floppy’s nails get too long, they can get caught in things, which can lead to painful tears and infections. You’ll need to keep your furry pal’s nails trimmed. Most rabbits need ‘peticures’ about once a month or so. Ask your vet to demonstrate proper techniques.

Ears

About once a week or so, you’ll need to clean Floppy’s ears. Never use Q-tips or other sharp objects. You can add a few drops of baby oil or bunny ear-cleaning solution to a soft cloth or baby wipe.
