Skin Problems in Cats

July 1, 2020
Kitties are known for having soft, pretty coats. Fluffy is also very good at keeping her fur clean and healthy. However, sometimes cats do develop issues with their skin or fur. This can be very uncomfortable, and even painful, for our feline friends! In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA veterinarian discusses skin problems in cats.

Warning Signs

Skin issues can manifest in a variety of ways. Hair loss is a common one. You may also notice flaking or redness on your pet’s skin. While sometimes skin problems can be obvious, at other times you’ll notice behavioral changes before you see anything unusual about your cat’s skin or fur. For instance, Fluffy may scratch herself frequently and/or start obsessively grooming herself. She may also shake her head a lot. This is often a sign of mites.

Types of Cat Skin Conditions

There are actually several different types of skin problems in cats. Some are caused by parasites, such as fleas, ticks, mites, and ringworms. Kitties may also develop polyps in their ears. Skin cancer is another possibility. Our feline pals can also have acne or dermatitis, which causes swelling, soreness, redness, and sometimes blisters. Allergies are another potential cause. (Note: if your pet has allergies, she will likely have other symptoms. These can range from respiratory issues, to nasal discharge, runny eyes, and/or tummy troubles.) Fluffy can also be afflicted by bacterial infections, insect bites (aside from fleas), and food intolerance. Call your vet right away if you notice any of these red flags.

Treatments

The good news is that most skin problems can be treated. Of course, you’ll need to take Fluffy to the vet. Your feline buddy may need some tests to determine exactly what the issue is. Once a diagnosis has been made, your vet will be able to discuss specific treatment options. These may range from parasite control to dietary changes to medication.

Prevention

Fortunately, good basic care will prevent many skin issues. A good diet, which contains essential fatty acids and Omega 3 and 6 oils, will keep your kitty’s skin and fur healthy. Brushing Fluffy will also help. Finally, keep up on your furry pal’s parasite control products, and take her to the vet regularly. Have you noticed any of these issues in your cat?
