Reasons to Adopt a Shelter Pet

April 15, 2021
April 30th is Adopt A Shelter Pet Month! Going through a shelter is a great way to find your new furry friend. While we are happy to see any pet go to a wonderful, loving home, shelter pets are often in desperate need. Sadly, many of them are running out of time. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet lists some reasons to consider adopting a shelter pet.

Find Your New BFF

Shelters have dogs and cats of all shapes and sizes. It’s always interesting to see how different people are drawn to different pets! No matter what you’re looking for, you’ll likely find a great match. That said, remember to keep an open mind. You may find that a sad, sweet unwanted pet completely melts your heart! Just make sure you’re ready to commit. Adoption is forever!

Save Money

Going through a shelter can save you quite a bit of money. Not only are adoption fees much lower than a breeder’s costs would be, you may also save on veterinary care. Most shelter pets have already been spayed or neutered, and they should be current on vaccines and parasite control. You may be able to save even more if you adopt a pet that’s having a hard time finding a home.

Help Other Animals

Going through a shelter is a small but positive change you can make in the world. For one thing, adopting from a shelter also benefits that shelter’s other furry wards. You’re also freeing up a slot, which will soon be filled by another adorable dog or cat in need of a home. Additionally, the adoption fees you pay will also help the shelter care for more homeless pets. You won’t need to wonder if you’ve inadvertently filled the bank account of an unscrupulous puppy mill or pet store owner. That’s really something you can feel great about!

Love And Loyalty

Many people have found that the pets they’ve adopted from shelters are extremely sweet, loving, and loyal. Pets know when someone has helped them, and shown them kindness, and they can be super grateful. Seeing a pet thrive with love and good care is a beautiful experience. Those purrs and tail wags are well worth it! Does your pet need to come in for an exam? Contact Westside Animal Hospital, your Savannah, GA veterinary clinic!
