Summer Care For Dogs

June 1, 2022
Summer is just around the corner, and the temperatures are climbing. Many of our canine pals love the hot weather. However, this time of year can be dangerous for Man’s Best Friend. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet discusses caring for Fido in the heat.

Hydration

First and foremost, make sure that your pooch always has plenty of fresh water. You may need to set up more than one watering station, especially if you have a large home or more than one pup. Do you like to take your furry bff out and about with you? Always bring water along for him. (Tip: Keep a gallon of water and a collapsible dish or doggy bowl in the trunk of your car. This is just good to have on hand anyway.)

Cold Snacks

Want a way to both cool your pooch off and get his tail going? Pick up some doggy ice cream for him! You can find it in many pet stores and supermarkets. You can also make your own! Just stick with ingredients you know are safe.

Climate Control

Fido should always have access to cool shady areas, and to climate controlled areas. Cars are a huge risk here. Parked vehicles can reach deadly temperatures in a very short amount of time! Even if it’s only 78, temps inside a closed vehicle can reach 120 in just a few minutes. When it’s 90, it may only take ten minutes for temps to reach a deadly 160. Cracking the window isn’t enough to keep Fido safe. If your pet can’t go indoors with you, leave him home.

Paw Care

Hot tar and asphalt can really do a number on Fido’s paws. Use paw balm to protect his furry feet, and try to avoid walking him on hot tar or asphalt. This is extra important after your pup has gone swimming, as dogs’ paws are extremely delicate when wet.

Watch For Warning Signs

Watch for signs that Fido could be getting too hot. These include drooling, panting, acting tired or restless, a warm back, dark or decreased urine, trembling, excessive thirst, and elevated pulse. If you notice any of these, immediately give him some water, get him out of the heat, and call your vet. Is your dog due for an exam?
