Caring for Your Aging Dog

August 1, 2015
Is your dog beginning to go grey around the muzzle? The time we have with our canine friends can pass in the blink of an eye, it seems. It often takes us by surprise to realize that Fido is reaching his golden years. To keep your dog happy, healthy, and comfortable in his senior years, you need to make some minor adjustments to his care regimen. In this article, your Pooler, GA vet at Westside Animal Hospital discusses senior dog care.

Diet

Proper nutrition is crucial to your canine friend’s health and well-being. Make sure that Fido is eating a good, nourishing diet, and switch him over to senior formula pet food when your vet recommends it. Supplements may also be beneficial. Fish oil, for instance, can help dogs with arthritis, as it keeps joints and bones lubricated. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Mobility

Senior dogs often have a hard time climbing stairs, getting in and out of cars, or even hopping up onto the sofa. Pet ramps or stairs will help old Fido get around more easily.

Exercise

While you certainly don’t want to overexert an aging dog, you shouldn’t let Fido become a complete couch potato, either. If your old buddy wants to nap all afternoon, let him … just be sure he does get some exercise. Take your canine pal on daily walks, but let him pick the pace, and turn back when he gets tired.

Veterinary Care

As your furry pal ages, his immune system will weaken, making it harder to fight off infections. Keeping up with Fido’s checkups, shots, parasite control, and dental care is very important to your canine buddy’s health. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Comfort

As your pooch ages, he’ll still be the same loyal and loving furry friend as always. In general, just make sure Fido feels comfortable and loved. We strongly recommend investing in a good doggy bed, to help your old buddy sleep comfortably. Senior dogs often find it easier to eat from elevated dishes, as they don’t cause as much neck strain as regular bowls. Your pooch will also become more sensitive to temperature extremes as he ages, so keep him indoors as much as possible when it’s really hot or cold outside.
