Socializing Your Kitten

August 2, 2022
Have you just adopted a kitten? Congratulations! Baby cats are adorable. They can also be a handful! Those first few months are a crucial time in little Fluffy’s life, as this is when she forms her opinion about the world. It’s very important for her to have a positive view of people, as this will help her grow into a friendly and at least somewhat polite adult cat. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet offers some advice on socializing your tiny ball of fur.

Be Furniture

Kittens are extremely tired. Little Fluffy can spend as much as 20 hours a day snoozing. Let your drowsy pet doze off on your lap or in your arms when she wants. This will really help her feel safe and loved, which will cement that special bond between you.

Spark Curiosity

Baby cats are very curious about, well, everything. Hold toys out to little Fluffy, and make that kissing sound we all do with cats. Chances are, she’ll approach you. When she does, pet her and praise her, and give her a treat.

Don’t Force Attention

One of the worst things you can do is make your kitten uneasy about being picked up or held. As soon as little Fluffy seems the slightest bit antsy, put her down. Even tiny kittens realize that they are supposed to decide when cuddle time starts and stops!

Talk To The Furball

Talk to your kitty in a gentle, friendly tone. It doesn’t matter so much what you say: the key is to get her used to your voice. You may find that the more you interact with little Fluffy, the more interactive she becomes. Plus, cats make great listeners!

Use Gentle Persuasion

This is also the time to teach your tiny furball proper manners. If she bites, scratches, jumps on the counter, or does something else she shouldn’t, tell her ‘No’ in a firm tone. You can also squirt her with water. Be consistent! Little Fluffy will get the point … eventually.

Enlist Allies

Part of socialization entails introducing little Fluffy to new faces. You probably won’t have much trouble getting people to stop over and pet your new furball! Here at Westside Animal Hospital, your Savannah, GA pet hospital, we love watching kittens grow into happy, healthy adults. Please contact us for all your kitten’s veterinary care needs.
