Summer Paw Care For Fido

June 15, 2023

Fido’s paws are actually pretty impressive. They act as shock absorbers, provide sensory information about his surroundings, cushion his bones and joints, and just help him get around. Those furry feet may need some extra care at this time of year, though. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet discusses keeping your pet’s paws in shape.

Heat

Here’s a fun fact about dog paws: there are three types, webbed, hare, and cat. All of them need extra care in summer. Heat is the biggest concern at this time of year. Hard surfaces, like tar and cement, can get scorching hot. Fido can get painful burns and blisters from those scorching surfaces, just as people can. Keep your canine pal on soft grass as much as possible. Paw balm or wax will help protect and moisturize those cute toe beans.

Cuts

Burns aren’t the only ‘pawsible’ injury to be concerned about. Fido can also get painful cuts from sharp rocks, shells, thorns, twigs, or broken glass. If you notice your pooch limping or licking his feet, immediately check his feet. If you see a minor cut or abrasion, you can treat it yourself with antiseptic. Anything beyond that would warrant a trip to the vet. You definitely don’t want your furry friend dealing with an infected foot!

Water

Does Fido like swimming? Be extra careful with his paws when he gets out of the water. Dogs’ skin gets very delicate and wrinkly when it’s wet, just as ours does. This makes him even more susceptible to cuts and blisters.

Nail Trims

No matter what time of year it is, you’ll need to keep up with those nail trims. If you’re nervous about doing it yourself, ask your vet to demonstrate proper techniques. Or, just schedule a quick pawdicure with your vet or groomer. Remember to give your canine buddy a yummy snack after his pawdicure!

Frito Feet

Have you ever noticed that your canine companion’s feet smell like corn chips? Frito feet really are a thing. The smell is a curious side effect of natural yeast or bacteria. It’s not unusual. However, it is worth mentioning to your vet.
