Playing With Your Kitten

July 1, 2023

National Kitten Day is coming up on July 10th. Of course, kittens should be celebrated all year. After all, they may very well be the most adorable things on the planet. One thing that makes these little balls of fur so much fun to have around is the fact that they are so playful. Read on for some tips on playing with little Fluffy in this article from Westside Animal Hospital, your Savannah, GA veterinarians.

Form Good Habits

Now is the time to teach your tiny little pal proper manners. Little Fluffy may very well bite or scratch you. It’s up to you to show her what is and is not proper petiquette. If your feline buddy attacks you, don’t yell at her or punish her: that will just scare her. Instead, tell her ‘No’ in a firm, disapproving tone. You can also squirt her with water or blow in her face. Then, ignore her for a while.

Put String Toys Away

String toys are definitely one of Fluffy’s favorite types of playthings. It’s always super cute seeing a little furball pouncing on a feather toy or fake squirrel. These are particularly fun, because your pet won’t be able to really predict her ‘victim’s’ movements. However, don’t leave these out after playtime is over. Your tiny pal could get entangled if she were to try and play with the toy herself.

Use Safe Playthings

Cats are known for being good at certain things. For instance, Fluffy is extremely talented at sleeping, looking cute, and getting into things. She’s also a pretty skilled hunter. However, this can backfire, as your feline friend won’t know what is and isn’t safe for her to pounce on. Don’t let your kitty play with anything that isn’t safe. That list includes small and sharp objects, wires and cords, plastic wraps and ties, and anything that could be toxic, such as medicine, chemicals, or pesticides.

Make It Routine

Kitties tend to thrive when they’re kept on set schedules. Try to play with your furry buddy every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes.

Photograph It!
