Bringing Your Cat To The Vet

August 15, 2023

August 22nd is a pretty important day for Fluffy: it’s Bring Your Cat To The Vet Day. Most of our feline patients are homebodies, who would much rather be left alone to focus on their busy napping schedules. However, your kitty does need good care. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, your Savannah, GA veterinarians, a local vet discusses bringing your cat to her doctor.

How Should I Take My Cat To The Vet?

You should only transport your furry buddy in a carrier. If Fluffy is loose in the car, she could get out when the door is opened. She could also distract the driver or get in their way, which can be very dangerous. We would recommend a hard-shell carrier, which will protect your kitty from getting bumped, and also offers much more protection in case of an accident. However, a fabric carrier is better than nothing. Avoid the cardboard ones: these should be considered one-time-use products, and are really for taking newly-adopted cats home.

How Do I Calm My Cat For The Vet?

To make the trip more comfortable for Fluffy, play soothing music on the radio. You may also want to look into using cat-calming pheromones. There are various options available, including treats and sprays. Follow directions carefully! Simply talking to your feline pal may also help soothe her.

Why Do Cats Cry On The Way To The Vet?

Most of our feline patients absolutely hate car rides. Fluffy may meow in protest all the way to the clinic, and all the way back. Some cats get so distressed that they begin to shed heavily. Fluffy often gets more distressed about the trip in to the clinic than she does about her actual appointments.

How Often Should I Take My Cat To The Vet?

Kittens will need a few initial appointments, to get them started out on the right paw in life. Microchipping and spay/neuter surgery are both very important. Little Fluffy will also need her initial exams, screenings and panels, as well as vaccines and parasite control. Many healthy adult cats only need to come in once a year, at least until they become seniors, at which time they may need to come in more often. Of course, Fluffy will also need to come in if she is sick or injured. Ask your vet for more information.
