Adopting a Senior Dog

November 1, 2016
November is Adopt A Senior Dog Month! This is a definitely a cause that we are happy to support. Senior dogs often have a very hard time finding loving homes. This is very sad, because these lovable pooches make absolutely wonderful pets! In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet discusses adopting senior dogs.

Benefits of Adopting Senior Dogs

There are many reasons that senior dogs make great pets. For one thing, older dogs often have a very lovable disposition. Fido tends to get very sweet and calm in his golden years. Your pup will be more likely to gently nudge your hand or doze off at your feet than dig up your garden or bowl your guests over at the door. Older dogs are often already trained, which can be very helpful for you. Being able to skip the housebreaking phase is definitely a plus! Also, your canine buddy won’t need as much playtime or exercise as a younger dog would. This makes older pooches a great choice for people who can’t quite keep up with a playful, frisky puppy. Last but not least, senior dogs are super cute! These adorable pooches have a special way of melting people’s hearts. It’s hard to resist those furry faces!

Helping Fido Settle In

If you’ve recently adopted a senior dog, you’ve done a very kind thing. Don’t be surprised if your pet sleeps a lot at first. Shelters are scary places for dogs! Fido may also be sad and traumatized after being separated from—or abandoned by—his former owners. Just give your pooch time to recuperate and adjust to his new surroundings, and focus on giving him great care. A trip to the vet’s is definitely in order. While you’re there, ask your vet for specific recommendations on your furry friend’s care, diet, and exercise needs.

Tail Wags

Fido’s golden years are a very beautiful and special time. You may find that walking your canine buddy is a great way to relax after a long day. Rather than charging after squirrels, your pup may just plod faithfully along beside you. But even if your pet doesn’t move very quickly, that cute furry tail will still work just fine!
