Five Ways to Maintain Your Pet’s Health in the New Year

January 1, 2017
Happy New Year! In 2017, make a resolution to maintain your pet’s health and well-being proactively. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, your Savannah, GA veterinarian’s office, you’ll learn how to do just that:

Spay and Neuter

If your pet hasn’t already been spayed or neutered, it’s time to act. Not only does spaying and neutering help control the homeless pet population and eliminate the risk of an unplanned litter, it offers various health benefits for your pet. The chance of genital cancer developing is virtually eliminated, and other cancer types like prostate and breast cancer are far less likely to be diagnosed. Even common ailments like UTIs aren’t as likely to occur in pets who have been spayed or neutered.

Vaccination

Have your pet vaccinated early on in life to prevent the dangers of diseases like rabies, parvovirus, distemper, hepatitis, leukemia, calicivirus, and others. It’s far easier to avoid these illnesses in the first place rather than eradicate them later! If you aren’t sure what vaccines your pet needs or may already have, talk to your veterinarian for further advice.

Pest Control

There are quite a lot of pests out there just waiting to take a bite out of your animal companion. Keep your furry friend on seasonal or year-round preventatives to ward off fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and parasitic worms like heartworm and roundworm. Preventative medications are far less troublesome and expensive than getting rid of an infestation after the fact. Talk to your veterinarian if you need help getting started.

Proper Diet

One of the easiest and most effective ways to keep your pet healthy throughout 2017 is by feeding them a great diet. Your pet should be eating a premium, well-balanced food that is appropriate for their age, weight, and breed. If you need a recommendation on a new food for your pet, or if you would like help transitioning your pet between diets, contact your vet’s office for advice from the professionals.

Veterinary Office Visits

Don’t forget that visiting your vet’s office regularly is one of the absolute best ways to keep your beloved animal companion healthy in the long-term. When your veterinarian examines your pet regularly, any health issues can be discovered and dealt with early, before they are allowed to develop any further.
