Have you recently adopted a bunny? If so, you’ve chosen a very cute pet! Bunnies do need quite a bit of love and care, however so you’ll want to do some research, and learn how to keep your pet happy and healthy. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet discusses Floppy’s basic needs.
Good Diet
Proper nutrition is very important! Fresh grass hay, such as Timothy hay, should make up the bulk of your pet’s diet. You can offer Floppy commercial pellets for her main meals. You’ll also need to offer your bunny fresh produce. Ask your vet for specific advice.
Comfy Habitat
Make sure your furry pal has a clean, comfy cage. The cage should be large enough so that she can stand up, hop around, stretch out, and play, without touching the sides or top. Floppy will also require a hidey-hole; suitable substrate, such as aspen; a water bottle; and dishes. You may want to add a litterbox and hay rack as well.
Exercise & Playtime
Your bunny will need lots of playtime to stay happy and healthy. Make sure Floppy gets at least a few hours of recess every day. Be sure to do some bunnyproofing before you let her out to play!
Toys
Floppy has open-rooted teeth, so she’ll need to chew to prevent her teeth from overgrowing. Offer your fuzzy friend lots of suitable chew toys. You can give your bunny many wood, wicker, or cardboard items. Just don’t let your furball chew or play with anything that has dangling threads, small parts, or sharp edges. Items coated in varnish, stain, or dye are also hazardous, as they might be toxic.
Veterinary Care
Just like any other pet, Floppy will need regular veterinary care. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule. Between appointments, keep a close eye out for signs of illness. Some common ones are stiff or unusual postures; lethargy; unusual vocalizations; fever; reduced appetite; respiratory issues; and unkempt fur. Contact your vet immediately if you notice anything amiss.
Love
Bunnies are actually very lovable, and are happiest when they feel cared for. Spend time with your cute pet every day: pet her, play with her, and groom her. Time spent with bunnies is never wasted!
