Camping With Fido

May 15, 2018
Are you going camping this summer? If so, you may want to take your pooch with you. Man’s Best Friend can make a great camping buddy! In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet discusses camping with Fido.

Packing

You’ll need to pack some things for your canine pal. Fido will need food, treats, toys, brushes, bedding, a leash and harness or collar, dishes, waste baggies, and, if applicable, his medicine. We also recommend bringing a pet first aid kit, a tick popper, towels, and a spare leash. If your campsite is near water, bring a doggy lifejacket along as well.

Preparation

Make sure that Fido obeys basic doggy obedience commands, like Sit, Come, and Lay Down. You don’t want your pooch running off into the woods! Dogs should also be microchipped, wearing ID tags, spayed or neutered, and current on all vaccinations and parasite control products.

Hazards

The Great Outdoors can be pretty dangerous for a dog! Wild animals, weather, and toxic plants are all potential dangers to be aware of. Trash is another concern: it could contain things like bones, tin foil, skewers, and can lids, which are all dangerous to Fido. Also, take care not to let your furry friend get too close to the firepit, even after the fire is out.

Water

Bring lots of water along for your canine buddy! Also, try not to let your pooch drink from open water sources, such as ponds, lakes, streams, or even puddles. The water may not be safe! If you are getting your water from the wild, treat it or boil it before giving it to Fido. (Tip: if you boil it, be sure to let it cool down first!)

Pet Check

Check your canine friend thoroughly each day. You’ll want to look for ticks and bug bites, as well as cuts or injuries.

Paws For Thought

Rough ground can do a number on your furry pal’s paws. Be sure to trim Fido’s nails before leaving. We also recommend using paw balm or wax on his paw pads.

Cleaning

As the saying says, leave nothing but footprints behind you. Be sure to clean up after your pet! (Tip: check local ordinances to see if you can bury Fido’s waste.) Please contact at Westside Animal Hospital, your Savannah, GA pet hospital, for all your dog’s veterinary care needs. We’re here to help!
