Hot Weather Care for Dogs

August 15, 2018
The dog days of summer are here! This time of year can actually be pretty tough on our canine friends. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet discusses caring for Fido in the heat.

Climate Control

Limit your pup’s outdoor time during the hottest hours of the day. Keep Fido cool and comfy in rooms cooled by fans or air conditioners.

Water

First and foremost, make sure that Fido always has plenty of clean, fresh water. If your pooch has a yard to run and play in, keep water stations outside for him too. You may want to get your furry friend a pet fountain or an automated waterer.

Exercise

Be careful not to overexert Fido on sweltering days. Dogs can overheat very quickly running and playing in the heat! Take your canine pal out for walks and play sessions in the mornings and evenings, when it’s cooler.

Paw Care

Walking on hot tar is just as painful for dogs as it is for people. Keep Fido on soft surfaces as much as possible, especially after he’s been swimming. You can also use paw wax to protect those furry feet.

Comfy Bed

Make sure Fido has a cool, comfy bed to sprawl out on. Hammock-type beds are great, as they allow air to pass below them. These are also perfect for the backyard, as they are easy to hose down.

Splashing Around

Consider getting Fido a kiddie pool to splash around in. Or, if your pooch likes to play in the spray from the hose, indulge him a bit, and give him get a good soaking.

Cold Snacks

Cool snacks are a great way to beat the heat! Fido can have some doggy ice cream, which you can find in many pet stores. You can also offer your pup homemade frozen goodies. Try putting some canned chicken, shredded cheese, and bacon bits into an ice cube tray. Then, pour sodium-free broth over it, and freeze overnight. Give your furry buddy one or two on hot days.

Summer Do

Fido may be more comfortable with a summer trim. However, this isn’t a universal recommendation, as some dogs’ coats can be damaged by haircuts. Ask your vet for specific advice.
