Is Your Dog Bored?

November 1, 2018
Did you know that boredom can be a serious issue for dogs? Fido is very intelligent, and can get restless and unhappy with nothing to do but stare at the walls all day. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet offers tips on keeping your pet happy and entertained.

Signs of Boredom

If Fido doesn’t have a way to entertain himself, he may channel his energy into misbehaving. Many bad habits, such as digging, chewing, getting into the garbage, or eating couch cushions, are actually signs of boredom. Excessive barking or whining can be indicative of doggy boredom, as can pacing and soiling inappropriately. Attention-seeking can also be a sign of boredom. For example, your furry buddy may run up to you with his favorite toy, follow, you around, or nudge you with his head. Or, he may act like he really needs a walk, when he actually just wants to sniff some grass.

Beating The Bored Doggy Blues

Making sure Fido is getting proper mental stimulation is very important. First and foremost, make sure your canine buddy has lots of fun toys. Offer Fido enriching playthings that provide mental stimulation. Puzzle toys are great for this. You can also give your dog treat-dispensing toys. These can keep him occupied for hours! Change your furry companion’s playthings out regularly to keep things fresh and fun for him. It’s also important to make sure your pet is getting enough exercise. Every pup is a little different, but most pooches need at least a daily walk. Ask your vet for more information.

Tips

Our canine pals need both physical activity and mental stimulation. The smarter your pet is, the more stimulation he will need. Training can be a great way to keep dogs entertained. Many pooches love learning new things! Leave a radio on for Fido when you go to work: the sound of music and voices will help keep him from getting bored. It can also help to put your pup on a schedule for feeding, grooming, walks, and playtime. If your dog knows that you’ll walk and play with him when you get home, he may be less likely to chew up your shoes while he is waiting for you Please contact Westside Animal Hospital, your Savannah, GA vet clinic, for all your dog’s veterinary care needs.
