Refreshing An Old Cat Tower

January 15, 2020
Cat towers are great for our feline pals. They offer Fluffy a napping spot, vantage point, jungle gym, and nail-care station all in one. However, sometimes kitties will ignore their ‘purrniture,’ and hang out in a shoebox instead. If your furball has lost interest in her tower, read on. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet offers advice on getting Fluffy to start using her tower again.

Clean It

Kitties are very clean, which is one reason they make such wonderful pets. Your feline buddy may turn her cute little nose up at a tower that is really dusty, stinky, and/or matted with hair. Vacuuming it may help here. For tougher stains, consider getting a carpet steamer with an attachment. These are definitely handy for people with pets to have around.

Recover It

If the tower is really worn or dirty, it may be easier just to recover it. You can use carpet scraps. Sisal rope will also work well.

Make It Tempting

No luck? Try sprinkling catnip around the tower, and give your cat toys and treats near it. You may also want to give your furry little diva lots of praise and ear scritches on her tower. This may remind Fluffy that her kitty tower is a good thing.

Move It

Sometimes cats just get used to things being in the background, and more or less forget about them. Try rotating the tower. Or, better yet, move it to a new spot. This may very well pique your feline friend’s interest. If possible, put it in a spot with a good window view, preferably one where Fluffy can watch birds and squirrels.

Add Access

Is your furry buddy entering—or perhaps already in—her golden years? If so, Fluffy may be having a hard time climbing her tower. You can try putting it near something she can jump off, like a sofa. If that doesn’t work, it may be time to get something a bit lower to the ground. (Tip: consider donating the old tower to an animal shelter or kitty rescue.)

Just Say No

Not having any luck? Try telling your furry pal to stay off her tower. Fluffy may very well hop right on! Do you have questions about your kitty’s health or care? Contact us here at Westside Animal Hospital, your Savannah, GA vet clinic, today!
