Tips for Boarding Your Dog

August 15, 2020
Are you going to be boarding your canine pal soon? Although your pooch would probably love to go everywhere with you, chances are you’ll have to board your furry buddy at some point. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet offer some tips on boarding Fido.

Vetting The Kennel

Don’t trust just anyone with your furry best friend! Do some research, and ask your vet for recommendations. Transparency is very important. That’s one reason we offer tours. Run from any kennel that doesn’t require proof of vaccinations. (Note: this of course doesn’t apply if you board with your vet, as they would already have that information.)

Pack Well

Kennels all have different policies when it comes to packing. Ask what you should and shouldn’t bring for Fido. If you’re packing food or medicine, include a few days’ extra, just in case.

Ask Questions!

Don’t be afraid to ask questions! You need to know things like if the kennel will reach out with minor questions, or only in emergencies. It may be easier to make a list, so you don’t forget anything.

Be Clear On Dropoff Times

Make sure you know when you can and can’t drop Fido off and pick him up. The last thing you want is to find out at the last minute that the kennel is closed when you’re leaving for the airport!

Provide Specific Information

Give any special directions clearly, both verbally and in writing. While the kennel staff may enjoy hearing about Fido’s ongoing battle with the squirrel across the street, it’s more important for them to know that he’s allergic to corn or hates thunderstorms.

Trial Run

Before taking a long trip, book Fido a shorter stay, like an overnight visit. It will be much easier for him if he already knows his home away from home.

Schedule

Find out in advance what Fido’s daily doggy schedule will look like. If it’s significantly different from what his usual routine is, try to get him adjusted before you leave town.

Avoid Long Goodbyes

It isn’t easy to leave your canine companion behind, even for just a few days. However, long goodbyes will only upset Fido, and they won’t make it any easier on you. Make drop-offs short and sweet!
