Frozen Treats for Fido

Do you enjoy summer? This time of year can be sweltering here in Georgia. Of course, we know the best ways to cool off: swimming holes, sweet tea, and frozen treats. Our canine pals also enjoy cold snacks when temperatures soar. As it turns out, it’s quite easy for you to make Fido some delicious summer snacks. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA veterinarian lists some that are guaranteed to get that cute tail going.

Cheeseburger Bits

Add some water to cooked ground beef or turkey. You can also add cheese and/or bacon bits. Put into an ice cube tray and freeze. Voila!

Banana/PB Treats

Combine ripe, soft bananas with organic peanut butter. (Note: check the PB label and make sure it doesn’t contain xylitol, as it’s toxic to pets.) Freeze in an ice cube tray for your furry friend. You may want some of these for yourself!

Doggy Ice Cream

You’ll need to start with a base. You can use plain yogurt; pureed pumpkin; ripe bananas; peanut butter; organic baby food; and/or sodium-free broth. To customize your furry buddy’s snacks, add crushed-up doggy treats; shredded beef or chicken; kibble; bacon bits; cheese; or dog-safe fruits and veggies, like blueberries or bananas.

Tuna Bites

Combine a can of tuna in water with plain, fat-free yogurt and some parsley, and freeze in an ice cube tray. This one’s also safe for kitties, though Fluffy will need smaller portions.

Pupsicles

Put some chew sticks or doggy treats into waxed paper cups. Then, just pour water or sodium-free broth over them. Freeze overnight.

Apple Snacks

You’ll need the ice cube tray for this one again. Put some apple slices down. Be sure to remove the seeds and pips. Then, add shredded cheddar. Pour sodium-free broth over them. You can try different varieties of this. Use shredded roast beef and sodium-free beef broth, or boneless salmon and spinach with fish broth.

Tips

These are just a few options. You can also mix and match, or try your own. Just avoid using ingredients that aren’t safe for Fido, such as garlic and onions; avocados; raw yeast, meat, or dough; currants, raisins, and grapes; chocolate; pitted fruits; or meat on the bone.
