Basics

It’s always fun to learn a little more about our canine companions. Poodles were originally water dogs, who were renowned for being great at retrieving fowl. (This should clue you in to two of Fido’s favorite activities: swimming and playing Fetch.) As far as breed origins go, no one is exactly certain where the poodle comes from. Germany is one strong contender. In fact, the German word ‘pudel’ was derived from a similar word that means ‘to splash.’ However, Fido also could have come from France, or possibly even Russia.

Grooming

You probably know that Fido’s thick, curly coat is his definitive feature. Many people clip their poodles, which helps keep them from getting matted. This of course will also keep Fido cooler in summer. You may be surprised to learn that you can pick from as many as 50 different doggy haircuts when bringing your pooch to the salon! No matter what style your pup is sporting, you’ll need to take care of his ears. Poodles have hair growing in their ears, which can cause problems. Your furry buddy may need medical grooming for this reason. Ask your vet for more information.

Temperament

Poodles have a reputation for being pampered lapdogs, but they are much more energetic and active than many people think. You’ll need to provide your furry friend with lots of toys, and take time to play with him every day. Poodles are very smart. In fact, they were once popular circus performers, who excelled at things like walking on tightropes and doing magic tricks. Training is also a must, as it is with all intelligent dogs.

Love

One great thing about the poodle is the fact that they are very loyal. Fido may be timid at first, and he might need some time to warm up to you.
