7 Things We Love About Guinea Pigs

March 1, 2022
Did you know that March is Adopt A Rescued Guinea Pig Month? Plus, today is National Pig Day! That’s reason enough to turn the spotlight on some of our tiniest—and most adorable—patients. If you’re looking for an animal companion that is cute and lovable, but also easy to care for, you may find these little guys are a great match. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet lists some key Guinea pig charms.

They’re Cute

Guinea pigs are really very charming. They come in many different colors and patterns. Some have long hair, and others are even curly!

They’re Cuddly

Many pocket pets are very timid, which is understandable as smaller animals are prey animals in the wild. Guinea pigs can be shy, but they can also form pretty strong bonds with their humans. Some even like to sleep in their owners’ laps!

They Can Learn Tricks

Did you know that you can teach cavies tricks? You probably won’t be able to get your little furballs to fetch your slippers, but you may be able to train them to come when called, go into their cage on command, or perform simple tricks, like jumping through hoops.

They Wheek

Cavies are generally quiet, but they do make some sounds. The most common Guinea pig vocalization is officially called a wheek. As you can probably guess, it’s really cute.

Popcorning

Speaking of cute, Guinea pigs have another adorable behavior up their sleeves: popcorning. This is what cavies do when they’re happy. It basically consists of them jumping straight up, rather like a corn kernel being popped.

They Take Great Photos

We never tire of seeing cute pictures of dogs and cats. However, small pets also make great models. If you need a pick-me-up, do an image search on ‘adorable Guinea pigs.’ We promise, you won’t be disappointed!

They’re Suitable For Kids

Guinea pigs are often chosen as children’s pets. There are good reasons for this: they’re gentle, cute, inexpensive, and easy to care for. Just be prepared to oversee your tiny furball’s care and handling.

Tips

Guinea pigs are great pets. However, like any other animal, they need proper care. Before adopting one, do lots of research and ask your vet for specific care instructions. Do you have questions about Guinea pig care? Contact us, your Savannah, GA animal clinic, today!
