Holiday Kitten Care

December 15, 2022
Have you just adopted a kitten? If so, you’re in for an extra adorable holiday season. Little Fluffy will waste no time in melting your heart and wrapping you around those tiny paws of hers! However, baby cats are fuzzy, meowing whirlwinds of mischief, so you’ll need to be on your toes over the next month or so. A local vet offers some advice on keeping your feline friend out of trouble in this article from Westside Animal Hospital, your Savannah, GA  Savannah, GA

Decorate Carefully

Many popular holiday decorations are dangerous to cats. That list includes things like tinsel, ribbons, and light cords, which can all choke or entangle little Fluffy; anything small or sharp, such as ornaments, ornament hooks, and manger pieces; candles; and many plants, such as holly, ivy, and poinsettia. Ask your vet for petproofing tips.

Tree

Keep your pint-sized pal in mind when putting your tree up. Put just a few unbreakable objects on the lower branches. The majority of your decorations should be on the top half of the tree.

Make Playtime Routine

We always recommend playing with kittens. For one thing, this will help little Fluffy burn off her zoomies. It’s also great for bonding and socialization. Don’t forget to put some fun toys in your feline buddy’s stocking!

Teach Good Petiquette

Don’t let little Fluffy get away with bad behavior, such as pouncing on toes or walking across counters. If your furry little friend misbehaves, clap your hands or squirt her with water, and then just tell her ‘No’ in a firm, disapproving voice.

Keep An Eye On The Furball

Kittens can fit into some very small spaces, which puts them at risk of getting stepped on and/or caught in or under things. Open appliances, such as dryers and even toilets, are a concern. If you’re having company, keep a close eye on little Fluffy.

Offer Lap Space

Did you know that kittens are even sleepier than other cats? There’s a good reason for this: feline growth hormones are released during sleep cycles. Let your little ball of fur snooze on your lap or in your arms. It’s important for your new kitten to feel safe and loved when she’s with you!  All of us here at Westside Animal Hospital, your Savannah, GA pet hospital, want to wish you a happy and safe holiday season.
