Caring for a Fluffy Dog

June 15, 2018
Do you have a super fluffy dog? Pups with long fur are super cute! However, that pretty coat will need some extra TLC. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet discusses caring for a longhaired dog.

Brushing

Dogs all have slightly different grooming needs. However, many longhaired pooches need to be brushed daily. Ask your vet for specific advice, including tips on cleaning your furry companion’s ears and eyes. During peak shedding times, take Fido outside to brush him. That way, the extra fur will just blow away, instead of getting stuck to your clothes and furniture. You may also want to wear an apron for your canine friend’s beauty sessions.

Parasite Control

Fleas and ticks are no fun for any pet, but they can be particularly problematic with fluffy ones. Keep up with Fido’s parasite control regimen!

Trims

It may seem like Fido would be more comfortable with a summer trim, but this isn’t necessarily the case. Thick coats often have insulating properties that protect dogs from heat as well as from cold. Also, your pup’s fur may not grow back properly after being cut. Check with your vet before taking your pooch to the doggy salon.

Nutrition

Proper nutrition is crucial to Fido’s health, and will also help keep his coat soft and shiny. Offer your canine companion premium food that contains amino acids and fatty acids, such as Omega 3 and 6 oils. This will keep his fur moisturized and healthy, thereby reducing the amount of hair he sheds.

Shedding Survival

A squeegee works great at getting pet fur off upholstered furniture. You can also use a damp cloth or a rubber dish glove. At peak shedding times, you may find it worth your while to use furniture slipcovers.

Bathing

When bathing Fido, work from the top down. That will help the shampoo and water move with his fur, instead of against it. You may also need to condition your furry pal’s coat. Ask your vet for more information.

Toe Fur

Does Fido have those cute tufts of fur growing between his toes? If so, you may want to trim these back. They can get matted easily, and can trap gunk and ice balls. This can be quite uncomfortable for your furry buddy! Please contact Westside Animal Hospital, your Savannah, GA vet clinic, anytime. We’re here to help!
