Disaster Preparation Tips for Pet Owners

September 1, 2016
Every year, natural disasters and other emergencies, such as fires, threaten the homes and lives of thousands, if not millions, of people, as well as their beloved pets. As a responsible pet owner, you’ll want to do everything you can to keep your furry friend safe during an emergency. While we hope you’ll never have to put this planning to use, we do urge all of our clients to take a few moments to prepare for the unexpected. Here are some disaster preparation tips for pet owners:

Identification

Make sure your pet is current on all shots and vaccinations, and has a collar with ID tags. If your pet isn’t microchipped, we strongly recommend getting this done right away. Microchipping your pet is one of the best things you can do to prepare for an emergency. If the worst-case scenario happens, and you and your furry friend are separated, this will greatly increase the chances of you and your pet being reunited.

Evacuation Plans

If conditions in or near your home are unsafe for you, they are also dangerous for your pet. Be ready to take your pet with you if you do need to evacuate. Fortunately, many emergency shelters do recognize how important our animal companions are to us, and now allow pets. This is not a universal practice, however, so you’ll want to call your local emergency management office in advance to get this information. If you can’t find a pet-friendly shelter, make a list of other options, such as hotels that allow pets, or friends and family members.

Riding A Storm Out

Even if you’re riding a storm out at home, or don’t have time to evacuate, you can still make crucial preparations. Keep at least a week’s supply of pet food at all times. If you have a storm shelter or safe room, stock it with pet supplies and get your furry pal familiar with it in advance. Be sure to take your pet indoors as soon as conditions get bad!

Emergency Kit

Have an emergency kit stocked and ready for your pet. This should include food; water; medicine; medical and vaccination records; leash; collar; and a first aid kit; as well as treats and toys. Include a soft blanket to help keep your pet comfortable. Please contact us for all your pet care needs. We are here to help!
