Caring for a Guinea Pig

March 1, 2016
Are you looking for a small pet that is big on personality? A Guinea pig could be a great match for you! These little furballs are both super cute and lots of fun! Guinea pigs are not difficult to care for, though, just like any other pet, they do have some specific requirements. Given that March is Adopt A Rescued Guinea Pig Month, we thought this was a great time to go over the basics of caring for Guinea pigs, also known as cavies. Read on for some cavy care basics, as presented by Westside Animal Hospital, your Savannah, GA veterinary clinic.

Home Sweet Home

Making sure your little buddy is comfortable and happy in his cage is very important! For one cavy, we recommend getting a cage that is at least 7.5 square feet, though you’ll need a bigger cage if you get more than one. A wire cage is a good option. Choose one with a solid bottom, so your adorable pet doesn’t hurt his tiny paws. You’ll need to add a safe substrate, such as aspen. Avoid pine or cedar substrates, which can be dangerous to small animals. Your furry friend will also need a water bottle, food dishes, and a hidey-hole.

Dinner!

Proper nutrition is crucial to all pets, and Guinea pigs are no exception. We recommend giving your little furball plenty of fresh grass hay, such as Timothy hay. You can give your pint-sized pal a commercial food for his main meals. To round out the little guy’s diet, you’ll want to supplement these things with fresh produce. Make sure to give your cavy plenty of foods that contain Vitamin C, which is crucial for cavies. Ask your vet for specific recommendations, including safe and unsafe foods, portion sizes, and suitable treats.

Playtime!

Cavies are very playful and curious. Provide your little furball with lots of toys, including plenty of suitable chew toys. You can actually make playthings for your cavy out of many household items, such as cardboard, paper, and wood items. Avoid anything coated with varnish, paint, glitter, or dye, as well as anything with sharp edges and/or small parts that could possibly cut or choke the little guy. Ask your vet for more information.
