Beating Litterbox Odors

May 1, 2019
Cats have many wonderful qualities that make them such great pets. They’re not only absolutely adorable and highly entertaining, they’re also very clean. However, while Fluffy’s natural inclination to use litterboxes does make things easier for you, there are some downsides to it. After all, your kitty’s purrsonal powder room probably isn’t doing much for your décor. It can also get a bit stinky. In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet offers some suggestions on beating litterbox smells.

Plants

Plants not only make your place look nice, they also help filter the air. Set out some pet-safe houseplants. This will also give your kitty the chance to peek out at you from behind green leaves. You can find a full list of suitable options online at the ASPCA website here.

Litter

First things first: make sure to keep Fluffy’s litterbox clean. We recommend scooping daily and changing the litter every week or so. Choosing a good litter is also very important. Cats can be a bit fussy about litter, so you may need to experiment a bit to see what your furball likes best.

Ventilation

Ventilation (or lack thereof) can have a big effect on how your home smells. If your kitty’s litterbox is in a bathroom or laundry room, keep the fan running in that room. If possible, open a nearby window when weather permits.

Air Purifiers

A good air purifier is always a worthy investment, especially for people with pets. This will also help keep fur and dander out of your home. Be sure to change the filter out regularly!

Deodorizers

There are now quite a few different deodorizing products you can get for your furry friend. Litter liners may be helpful. You can also try deodorizing powders. Air fresheners can help as well. Or, if you want to take a more DIY approach, sprinkle some baking soda in Fluffy’s litterbox.

Diet

Good nutrition is very important! While Fluffy’s litterbox will probably never smell good, if the odors are extremely foul, your feline pal may be having digestive issues. Ask your vet for more advice.

Avoid Overcrowding

Do you have more than one cat? If so, you’ll need more than one litterbox. Kitties hate sharing bathrooms! Please call us here at Westside Animal Hospital, your Savannah, GA vet clinic, for all of your cat’s veterinary care needs. We’re happy to help!
