Swimming With a Senior Dog

July 15, 2020
Is your dog entering his golden years? One thing that can be an issue with older dogs is getting them the right type and amount of activity. Fido will get tired more easily than he once did. Plus, if he gets arthritis, as many dogs do, he’ll also be stiff and sore. However, you don’t want to let your canine buddy become a complete couch potato. Swimming is a great option here! In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA discusses swimming with older dogs.

Benefits

Swimming is great for many of our canine pals. However, it’s especially beneficial for older dogs. The water will support Fido’s weight, offering him an easy, low-impact workout that won’t hurt or stress any sore bones or joints. It will also help your pooch build muscle, and is wonderful for his overall fitness. Last but not least, it’s a great way to cool off on sweltering summer days!

Things To Consider

Swimming isn’t right for all of our canine friends. For one thing, if Fido didn’t like swimming when he was younger, he probably won’t be any more enamored of it now. Some dogs are scared of the water, while others just aren’t cut out for swimming. Don’t force your pooch to go swimming if he doesn’t enjoy it! Also, if your pet has ear problems, or is recuperating from illness or injury, be sure to check with your vet before taking him into the water.

Safety

Always put your pup’s safety first. Only take your four-legged pal swimming in pools or in areas that are safe for dogs. Don’t bring Fido to any spots where gators or snakes may be lurking! Also, never leave your four-legged pal unattended near the water, even for a minute. If you have a pool, make sure your furry buddy knows where the exit is. We also strongly recommend keeping pools fenced off when you aren’t using them. Older dogs sometimes have vision problems, and they can get confused and forgetful. This puts them at heightened risk of falling in. Finally, if you’re going to a lake or pond where there’s a chance that your cute pet could float into deep water, put a doggy lifejacket on him. Better safe than sorry! Please contact us here at Westside Animal Hospital, your Savannah, GA pet clinic, anytime. We’re always happy to help!
