Summer isn’t far off now! While we have a ways to go before the hottest weather, it’s definitely time to prepare. Heat can be tough on our furry pals! In this article from Westside Animal Hospital, a Savannah, GA vet discusses getting your four-legged buddy ready for the heat.
Water
Overheating and dehydration go hand in hand, or rather, hand in paw. These are both huge concerns at this time of year. Make sure your pet always has access to fresh, clean water. You may want to set out more than one water bowl, especially if you have multiple pets and/or a large house. Most pets prefer to drink running water. You may want to consider getting Fido and Fluffy a drinking fountain.
Grooming
Brushing your pet daily will actually help a lot with keeping them cooler. That extra fur will interfere with the insulative qualities of their coat. This is a good time for you to spend time with your four-legged friend, and check them for wounds, fleas, and/or ticks. Fido may be more comfortable with a haircut in summer. You can also get him a cooling vest.
Paws
Paw care is also important at this time of year. Use paw balm or wax to protect Fido’s feet, and keep him on soft ground as much as you can.
Preventative Care
Speaking of fleas and ticks, make sure that Fido and Fluffy are current on their preventative care. Your pet should also be microchipped, vaccinated, and spayed or neutered.
Frozen Snacks
Who doesn’t love a cold treat on a sweltering day? Pick up an extra ice cube tray, and dedicate it to your furry friend. You can make Fido some snacks by simply pouring sodium-free broth over kibble, treats, or shredded meat. As for Fluffy, mix small portions of wet cat food with water, and freeze that.
Cool Spots
Make sure your pet always has a shady spot to retreat to. You may want to move Fido’s bed to a cooler area, and/or point a fan at or over it. If you want to go all-out, buy or make your fuzzy buddy a hammock bed. These are great for warm weather! The air passes beneath them, keeping them cooler. Please contactWestside Animal Hospitalfor your pet’s veterinary care needs. As your Savannah, GA veterinary clinic, we are here to help!
